Riesa
Cargill GmbH in Riesa is one of the three German locations in which vegetable oils are processed and refined.
The Riesa location was founded in 1904 under the name OHG Einhorn & Co. as a typical oil mill of the time. Linseed and, later, rapeseed were processed. A complex modernization and expansion of the oil mill took place in the 1990s. Since then rapeseed and sunflower seeds have been processed here. Two newly installed operating units – the refinery and the bottle filling facility – were put into operation in 1993.
Cargill took over the Riesa plant in 1999, together with the location in Hamburg. Today we employ 90 qualified and dedicated employees in our oil mill, refinery, the bottle filling facility, and in the laboratory.

Products
- Rapeseed oil – Hearty, healthy, and for everyday use
- Sunflower oil – Healthy and rich in vitamin E
- Rapeseed meal – A valuable source of protein in animal feed
- Sunflower meal – Important source of protein and crude fiber
Rapeseed oil is a high-grade cooking oil, rich in unsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids. Refined rapeseed oil is tasteless and has a special feature: it can be heated to high temperatures and is therefore highly valued, not only by top chefs. In the supermarket you can find it in reputable margarines, delicatessen salads, and numerous other foods.
Sunflower oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. It has a wide variety of uses; e.g. in salads and in the preparation of hot meals.
Rapeseed meal is used widely in the production of compound feedingstuffs due to its balance of protein, energy, and a richness in essential amino acids.
Sunflower meal arises as a by-product of oil extraction from the sunflower seed and is a good source of crude fiber for ruminants, laying hens, and sows.
Why we get involved locally – Corporate responsibility
Nature and sustainability are important issues for us. They have a direct influence on our work at the location and on our environment in the neighborhood. For this reason supporting different activities financially and energetically is a matter of course for use.
Examples of our involvement:
- Promoting and supporting the Riesa youth fire department
- Planting campaign of apple and pear trees in the "Projekt- und Erlebnisgut" in the district of Göhlis, on the occasion of the 800th anniversary
- Field day for children and adolescents in Beierfeld with a visit to the Red Cross Museum and a mine.
- Campaign "Our Nectar Meadow 2015": Cargill provides each one of the 1,800 employees in Germany with a mixture of seeds. Blooming meadows develop and support biodiversity

Resource conservation in Riesa
The processing of oilseeds and the processing of crude oils into refined cooking oils is an energy-intensive process. We have been optimizing and improving our processes for years. One the one hand, this is in order to ensure production without interruptions (i.e. without loss of power) which meets the relevant quality requirements.
On the other hand, we have succeeded in reducing the consumption of steam, and thus electricity, year on year by installing various steps for energy recovery. In the summer of 2015 we implemented a very important project for the location – the installation of a highly efficient power generation plant (combined heat and power plant) for producing our own electricity required in the factory while recycling the waste heat that occurs at the same time.
