Hamburg-Harburg

Inpage Hamburg-Harburg Cargill operates one of the most modern vegetable oil refineries in Europe in the Hamburg district of Harburg. Oils and fats are mainly produced for the food industry at this location.

Our factory boasts a broad product range, consisting of a wide variety of vegetable oils, such as rapeseed, sunflower, and high-oleic sunflower oil, as well as diverse tropical fats, such as palm oil, various palm oil fractions, coconut oil, and palm kernel oil.

These products are modified in state-of-the-art production processes and delivered just in time as per customer requirements.

Our modern fat-hardening and transesterification systems allow us to manufacture customer and application-specific products.

Flexibility and customer orientation are our first priorities. For this reason, various investments have been made in Harburg over the past few years, including the construction of a private wharf and in state-of-the-art refining technology.

History of the location

The Hamburg factory was founded by the Brinkman and Mergell families with the name "Harburger Ölwerke Brinkman und Mergell" – or "HOBUM" for short – and was sold to the Belgian Vandemoortele group in the 1990.

In 1998 Cargill procured the European oil and fat refining activities of the Vandemoortele group, which included the Hamburg-Harburg location.

Products

The vegetable oils and fats produced in Harburg are used in various applications. This primarily includes the food industry. The products are also used in the manufacture of animal nutrition and for technical applications, however.

For example, consumers encounter our products in margarine, pastries, hazelnut spreads, and various frying fats. Other applications are the production of emulsifiers and candles. In total, the product range of the Hamburg plant covers around 300 different fat mixtures. This means the Hamburg factory is able to satisfy the very broad requirements of the processing industry.

Why we get involved locally – Corporate responsibility

Corporate responsibility forms a significant component of all our activities and is not limited solely to our own business, but also our neighborhood. The implementation of corporate responsibility is important to our workers. This becomes especially clear in the involvement of the Cares Councils. This is where employees come together in their spare time to get involved in social and environmental causes in the surrounding areas of our locations.

Cargill has 360 Cares Councils around the world, which support numerous projects. A focus is placed on the following issues: Health and nutrition; responsibility for the environment; investment in education.

Within the Hamburg Cares Council, projects to be supported are sought, the type of assistance is agreed upon, and those goals are implemented jointly by work colleagues. It is in these projects that Cargill employees roll up their sleeves and really get involved in teamwork.

Examples of our involvement:

  • "Hamburg tidies up" – Cargill employees took part in the "Hamburg tidies up” campaign. Together with 70,000 other Hamburg citizens, they set about making the streets cleaner
  • Furthermore, we support several social projects with sports associations through our Cares Council – Cargill's volunteer group
  • Each year we help out with campaigns for World Food Day in April and World Environment Day in October
