For many years the production facility belonged to Nestlé Deutschland Chocoladen Werk Hamburg.
In October 2014 it was integrated into the Cargill Group. Since its integration Cargill has made many investments and performed much modernization. Our product at the location is cocoa mass, which we supply to customers all over Europe.
There are currently 20 employees at the location.
Cocoa mass is produced by roasting and grinding cocoa beans. The following steps are performed in production:
- Separating the cocoa nibs from the cocoa husks
- Fine grinding
Cocoa mass is the base product for all chocolate products in the industrial and end-consumer segments.
You can find out more about our cocoa and chocolate portfolio on Cargill's international cocoa and chocolate website.
History of the location
The Hamburg factory for Cocoa mass manufacture was founded in August 1994.
It has belonged to Cargill since 2004.
Why we get involved locally – Corporate responsibility
Corporate responsibility forms a significant component of all our activities and is not limited solely to our own business, but also our neighborhood. The implementation of corporate responsibility is important to our workers. This becomes especially clear in the involvement of the Cares Councils. This is where employees come together in their spare time to get involved in social and environmental causes in the surrounding areas of our locations.
Cargill has 360 Cares Councils around the world, which support numerous projects. A focus is placed on the following issues: Health and nutrition; responsibility for the environment; investment in education.
Within the Hamburg Cares Council, projects to be supported are sought, the type of assistance is agreed upon, and those goals are implemented jointly by work colleagues. It is in these projects that Cargill employees roll up their sleeves and really get involved in teamwork.
Examples of our involvement:
- "Hamburg tidies up" – Cargill employees took part in the "Hamburg tidies up" campaign. Together with 70,000 other Hamburg citizens, they set about making the streets cleaner
- Furthermore, we support several social projects with sports associations through our Cares Council – Cargill's volunteer group
- Each year we help out with campaigns for World Food Day in April and World Environment Day in October
