Hamburg-Rothenburgsort
Lecithins and phospholipids have been produced in Hamburg-Rothenburgsort for over 60 years. The location has belonged to Cargill since April 2006. We process oilseeds, such as rapeseed, sunflower seeds, and soybeans. With their high nutrition content and healthy properties, they are used as raw ingredients and additives, as well as natural emulsifiers for foods, dietary foodstuffs, cosmetic products, and drugs, as well as for animal feed and technical applications.
The Cargill Texturizing Solutions business unit works within a network of application and service centers, distribution organizations, technical laboratories, and production facilities around the world. We employ over 140 people at our Hamburg-Rothenburgsort location.
History of the location
Cargill Texturizing Solutions Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG arose from what was Lucas Meyer GmbH & Co., a family company first founded in Hamburg in 1923 for the export of pharmaceutical specialties.
In 1949 the company started lecithin production and its own research laboratories at Ausschläger Elbdeich in Rothenburgsort.
Since then the company has developed itself into a globally successful enterprise, with locations on nearly every continent, supplying many important segments of the food, dietetic, and drugs industries.
The location has belonged to Cargill since April 2006.
Products
Lecithins possess emulsifying and stabilizing properties. They ensure the proverbial je ne sais quoi which brings out the special quality and the pleasure contained in many foods. For example, they ensure the delicate texture of chocolate, crumb uniformity in bread, and the spreadability of margarine. Lecithins are contained within everyday cosmetic products, such as hair and skin care products, soaps, and sun lotions.
Technical industries use lecithins for building materials, paints, inks, or leather care products, amongst other things. In animal nutrition lecithin is used as an emulsifier, but mostly due to its favorable nutritional properties (also permitted by the EU in bioproducts). The drugs industry is also one of its customers.
Why we get involved locally / corporate responsibility
Cargill provides money for projects involving nutrition, the environment/sustainability, and education / child development every year. For that reason projects in Hamburg-Rothenburgsort can be supported financially and energetically. A Cares Council – a group of employees helping out in their spare time – implement projects with or in social institutions or environmental organizations on location.
Examples of our involvement:
- Active support of the local football association through leisure opportunities
- Sport, fun, and excitement for Kindergarten children: Cargill colleagues acquaint children with the natural sciences using an experiment box
- Participation in the "HSH Run" for the campaign "Children Helping Children"
