Agriculture
As one of the world’s leading merchants of grains and oilseeds, Cargill connects producers and users of grains and oilseeds around the globe. We operate on an integrated global basis to source, store, trade, process and distribute grains and oilseeds including wheat, corn, oilseeds, barley and sorghum, as well as vegetable oils and meals. We have a broad global presence in grain origination, shipping and processing, offering a range of farmer services and risk management solutions, and have significant expertise in handling identity preserved and differentiated products.
In Germany, our agricultural supply chain activities include:
- Processing, storing, trading and exporting grains and oilseeds
- Serving the needs of the food and biodiesel sectors
Helping our partners thrive
We process grains and oilseeds for both the domestic and export markets. Our products supply our own mills and starch plants in Germany while also being exported out of the European Union.
Our strategy is to build and maintain a reputation as the 'Partner of Choice' and we work hard to make our customers' businesses more successful. For example, we have increased the capacity of our oil mills in order to meet the growing demand from food and biodiesel customers, and also developed a new glycerine refinery to serve a broader range of customer requirements.
Customer service is a key strength in Germany. As a major supplier of refined oil, we have the ability to secure the supply of raw materials for both food and biodiesel customers. In addition, we are able to transport raw materials and finished products in the most convenient, cost-effective way - from trucks and trains to barges via the nearby rivers Main and Rhine.
Our capabilities and resources
Located in Salzgitter, our main office trades grains and oilseeds across Northern Europe, covering Austria, the Czech Republic, Scandinavia and the Baltic states as well as Germany.
Our crush plants in Riesa and Salzgitter process rapeseed and sunflower seeds, with the rapeseed meal supplied to the German compound feed sector and the oil being either further refined to food grade or sold into the biodiesel market.
Our biodiesel facility is located in Frankfurt at the Höchst Industrial Park. A by-product of biodiesel production, glycerine, is processed in our refinery before being sold to the market. Its applications are primarily in the food, cosmetic, feed and technical sectors and Cargill glycerine can be found in products from toothpaste and hair care to pet food and chewing gum.
